Data Types

Depending on the number and type of modules installed, Stock Investor can require up to four different types of data to function: System Data, Price Data, Fundamental Data, Headline News Data and Street Event Data.

The manner in which  Stock Investor downloads and uses them differs.

System Data

System data includes data that is downloaded and globally referenced throughout Stock Investor.

While the vast majority of system data does not change often, new system data and changes to existing system data will require periodic maintenance to keep Stock Investor completely up to date.

Examples of system data that change include interest rates, currency exchange rates and cross rates. Refer to the Menu Bar Settings Commands section of this Help for more information on Currencies, Cross Rates and Interest Rates.

This data needs to be periodically updated as interest rates and exchange rates frequently change. The frequency of updates will depend on what type of trading the user is engaged in.

System data also includes all the symbols for the markets that the user specifies. These symbols are stored locally and used system-wide in Stock Investor.

All system data, including for symbols that are currently held on your local PC, is updated using the Update Manager.

When you start Stock Investor you will be prompted to update system data every 24 hours. It is suggested that you attend to this simple maintenance task at startup each day. Daily update is the default time period; you can change this to a longer time period from the General tab of the Application Settings dialog.

Note   If you leave Stock Investor running for long periods of time, you will have to remember to periodically update the system data. The prompt only appears at startups.

Price Data

Price data is data collected from various exchanges and then delivered over the Internet to Stock Investor by the Data Provider.

Price data is primarily retrieved from the HUBB data server in response to Data-on-Demand requests made manually by the User, or by a trigger set by the user.

Price data is referenced using the symbols that are downloaded on to your PC.

Price data is referenced to individual market symbols; each symbol represents a unique security traded on a specific exchange. The exchanges determine the symbols for the securities traded on that exchanges.

Stock Investor maintains a database of symbols on your PC, and uses this system data (see next section) to reference price data from the HUBB server, your initial Data Provider.

Price data can come from the different exchanges in a variety of formats, and HUBB will normally transform all the exchanges’ data into a common format before transmitting it to their customers.

Regardless of the format, price data generally contains common components, the most basic being open, close, high, low and volume. Tick data, which represents a single trade, will generally have price and timestamp. These examples are the minimum, many exchanges provide additional data.

The price data components downloaded and saved by Stock Investor can be viewed in the Price Data window.

Amount of price data retrieved for symbol is initially 36 months. This means that the first time a Data-on-Demand request is run for a symbol, the default amount of 36 months data will be retrieved and stored on your local PC. Thereafter, each time a new DoD request is run for that symbol, the data on your local PC will be "topped-up" from the point of the last DoD data retrieval. This allows faster response times.

If more than 36 months of data is required, you can make a Custom Data on Demand request in which you specify the number of months or years of data to be retrieved for a symbol. You can also set the default to a larger or smaller value than 36 months.

Fundamental Data

The Stock Investor module uses Fundamental Data to display the results of  various financial analyses and price valuations.

Fundamental Data is based on financial statements and other figures and information retrieved from, or calculated using, a company's accounts and other regulatory reports periodically required to be compiled and published.

The Fundamental Data used in Stock Investor  is sourced from Thomson Financial's  WorldScope Global Database.

Fundamental Data is referenced using the stock symbols.

Stock Investor retrieves the data required for the various displays from the server and displays it.

Fundamental Data is not stored locally on the PC. At the end of each session the data is discarded.

Headline News Data

The Stock Investor module also downloads Headlines and related News Data to populate the Headline list and news articles pop-up boxes.

The content is sourced from Thomson Financial's NewsEdge service.

Street Events Data

The Stock Investor module also downloads Street Events Data to populate the various Market Events and Company Events calendars that can be generated.

In a manner similar to the Headline News Data, the Street Events Data is not stored locally, only displayed and discarded at the end of the session.
