Chart Properties Overview

The appearance of a price chart and its components, both in terms of its visual display, as well as the scope of the data that is displayed at one time, are controlled from a number of different locations.

There are essentially three types of display controls: chart background controls, bases series controls and independent object controls.

The display of the chart page work area can also be affected by various chart and data display controls such as zoom, intervals, full screen, etc.

Chart Properties

By chart properties we mean the look and feel of the price chart's background: for example its color, the color and font of the x and y axis, etc.

The commands to manage these display variables are found on the seven tabbed pages of the  Chart Properties dialog box.

To find out how to open the dialog box, and more information about the individual tabbed pages, go to the Chart Properties topic, or click on any of the tabs in the above graphic to go to its individual topic.

Base Series Properties

Each price chart it based on a single symbol's data, this is called the base symbol, or base series.

It is always the first item listed in every price chart's legend located in the top left corner of each price chart.

Select the series chart, or its legend, to open its Series Properties dialog box:

Each chart type has slightly different properties on 3 or 4 tabbed pages.

To find out how to open the dialog box, and more information about the individual tabbed pages, go to the Series Properties topic, or click on any of the tabs in the above graphic to go to its individual topic.

Chart Object Properties

Each object displayed in the price chart work page, for example drawing tools out put such as trendlines, text, horizontal lines, etc. as well as indicators and Hi-Lites, has its own Properties dialog box from which its display and parameters can be adjusted.

The types of parameters, and the different display settings available, vary widely. However, each Properties dialog box is accessed in a similar manner and generally adheres to the same format.

Refer to the Properties Dialog Box topic in the Shared Utilities section for more information on this general behaviour, otherwise go to the help for each chart object for more specific information on its parameters and settings.

Data Display Controls

Data display can be altered in a number of different ways.

The amount of data displayed on a screen is affected by the scope of the display. The Zoom and full screen button can affect this, as can the navigation buttons.

Data display is also affected by the type of interval used to create the chart.

The actual data used to create the display can be viewed in the Floating Data window, and the cross hairs tool can be used to reference individual intervals in a chart.

The standard tool set for working with charts appears in the center-right of the chart work pages's Function Bar:

For more information go to the Chart Display Tools topic.
