Pre-computed Scans work page

Pre-computed scans are scans developed by Stock Investor's technical experts and are run on the HUBB server each day at the end of trading. The results are saved and can be accessed at any time by users. The results are always ready for immediate download and display.

Click on the Pre-computed Scans button in the Scanners toolbar button's drop-down menu to open the work page.

Pre-computed scan selection and results display both take place on the work page:

Pre-computed Scans Selection Area

All available pre-computed scans are listed in the window on the left. They are organized into two types of scan: Trade Setups and Rankings

Trade Setups

Trade Setups use a number of different indicators, Hi-Lites and signals to identify trade formations.

Only symbols that meet the criteria will be included in the scan results list. The number of symbols which meet the criteria for each particular scan type will be shown in the Count of Contents column.

Click on the particular scan type label to show a list of all the symbols that meet the criteria in the full Pre-computed Scan Results List at right.

When a chart for a scan result is selected [see next section in this topic] the chart is displayed together with the indicator or Hi-Lite used to detect the formation turned on to indicate the exact location of the beginning and end of the trade formation.

For more information on these types of scans, go to the Trade Setups scan types topic.

Rankings

Rankings apply a variety of indicators and signals to all symbols in a market.

All active symbols will result in a display of some sort.

The Rankings scan types applies a particular indicator or signal to all the symbols, and then returns a predetermined number of the most dramatic results in its scan result list.

For more information on these types of scans, go to the Rankings scan types topic.

Displaying Results in the Pre-computed Scans work page

To retrieve and display a list of results for each of the available pre-computed scans, open the Pre-computed Scans work page by clicking the Pre-computed Scans command in the Scanners drop-down menu.

When the Pre-computed Scans work page opens, it re-populates itself with the most recent scan results for the currently selected Market.

Change Market

Select a new Market from the drop-down and the results for other available markets will be retrieved and displayed.

Change Date of Results

The Use Current Data check-box is the default setting. This will retrieve the most recent date's data for the selected market.

Enter a new date (using the DD/MM/YYYY format) into the Search Date text box (or use the drop-down calendar selector tool) and click Enter to retrieve the results for that day.

When a previous date is entered and results returned, clicking the price chart icon for a scan result will open that symbol's chart page, at the Search Date and in the Walk Through Mode.

The Walk Through Mode enables users to then "step through" the next trading sessions to see how effective the scan criteria had been. For more information, go to the Walk Through help topic in the Charts section of this help.

Note - If a non trading day (for example Saturday, Sunday or a holiday) is selected, a warning box "Cannot find results for DD-MM-YYYY" will display.

Optionables

The Optionables check-box toggles the display between all securities and only those securities that have options listed for them.

Daily/ Weekly

Toggle between Daily and Weekly in the intervals selection box to show results for the scans on weekly or daily charts. When the price chart for a weekly result is opened, the chart and its indicators will display, likewise when Daily is selected, only results calculated on a daily basis will be displayed and the display will be in daily charts along with the indicators used to identify the formation.

Results Details

For each pre-computed scan type, there will be an entry in the Precomputed Scan Selection Area on the left.

Three items are displayed for each scan type:

List Name

The List Name is the name of the HUBB pre-computed scan used to create the results list.

Select one to view the full Precomputed Scan Results List at right.

For a description of each of the Hubb pre-computed scan types, go to either the Trade Setups or Rankings scan type topics.

Date

The Date column will show the data date used by the server to create the scan results appearing in the current results list.

Normally the pre-computed scans are run every market day.

When scan results for a date different from the current date is retrieved, this column will indicate the date of the scans.

Count of Contents

The number of results the scan detected, all will appear in the results list at right.

Note - Fresh scans will be loaded into this list each time you open a pre-computed scan page if the Update Data when new window is opened setting is checked (this is the default setting) in the Remote Data dialog of Application Settings.

Pre-computed Scan Results list

Select a scan type from the Pre-computed Scans Selection area on the left and left mouse click once. A list of the results for the selected market and day will be displayed in the Pre-computed Scans Results List on the right.

Results Table

The scan results are displayed in a table. Each row contains the details for the symbol which satisfied the scan type's scan criteria.

The columns of the table always include the stock's identifying symbol and a link to its price chart.

Views

Often other details of the price data or fundamental data used by the scan will also be displayed in the table.

There are five different results tables in Stock Investor, go to the Views help topic for more information.

Filters

In addition to different views, the results for multi-criteria scans can be "filtered" to show various levels or results. For example, for a scan that has three criteria, by filtering out one criteria all of the stocks that meet only the two remaining criteria can be displayed. For more information, go to the Filters help topic.

Sort

Many of the columns can be alphanumerically sorted.

Click on a column's heading and a small triangle will appear. Click it to toggle between an ascending and descending sort of the entire table.

For more information, go to the Sort section of the View and Filters help topic.

Scan Results Management: Data, Save and Print

A number of commands are available in the function bar to manage the results and use the result's data.

DoD Go button

Use the Go button to refresh the list of available scans.

Check the Date column in the Pre-computed Scans Selection Area to confirm the date of the data used by the server to create the scan. If it is not up to date, or if it is not the date you have selected using the Search Date selector, run the DoD Go function to retrieve fresh scans.

Action menu

The Action menu is similar to those found in the user-defined scans Search Results page.

Detailed information and charts for selected symbols can be opened, and the list can be saved or printed.

The Action menu also contains an important data management tool, the Delete all offline content command [see description below].

Actions for ..."Symbol"

Select a result from the results list. The Actions for ... command will become active and change to Actions for "Symbol", the "Symbol" being the company included in the results list. In the above example the Actions For submenu applies to the UPS (United Parcel Service Inc) company.

The following commands will then be available in the sub-menu for the symbol: Display Price Data table, Convert to Price Chart, and Open the symbol's floating Information dialog box.

Delete all offline content

This import data management tool has a global effect on all pre-computed scan data previously downloaded and cached locally on the PC.

While all pre-computed scans are available to be downloaded from the server, each download is saved on the local PC and if that particular scan is referenced in the future, the system will first look to retrieve it from the local directory, and if it cannot be located there, then retrieve it from the server.

This increases the speed of response and is more efficient.

Normally there is no need to remove the locally saved data.

If however, the data either needs to be removed (perhaps for resource reasons) or the data has become corrupted and must be replaced, all of the previously downloaded pre-computed scan data can be permanently erased by the Action menu's Delete all offline content command.

After all the data is erased, the process of retrieving data from the server, displaying it and saving it locally will recommence. During the period that the local database is being repopulated, the need to retrieve all data from the server will lower performance.

Print Results

Select a type from the Pre-computed Scans Selection Area and then the Print Results command. The list currently in the Precomputed Scan Results List at right will be printed.
