U.S. Markets Closed Today and Tuesday

Paul Dykewicz

The NYSE Euronext (NYX) announced that it closed U.S. markets today and tomorrow due to Hurricane Sandy, which is expected to cause flooding and damaging winds in New York City. The exchange released a statement indicating that it supports the consensus of the markets and the regulatory community that the dangerous conditions developing due to Hurricane Sandy will make it extremely difficult to ensure the safety of people if the markets were open. In consultation with other U.S. exchanges and market participants, the NYSE Euronext announced that it will work with the industry to determine the next steps in restoring trading as soon as the situation permits. The shutdown marks the first time the U.S. markets have closed due to weather since September 25, 1985, when Hurricane Gloria hit the East Coast.
