A rare strain of soil-born fungus is imperiling as much as 95 percent of all bananas imported by North America and Europe. The “TR4” version of Panama disease has broken out of Southeast Asia and spread to the Middle East and Africa, putting more than $8.9 billion of bananas at risk, according to the United Nations’ Food & Agriculture Organization. While the disease hasn’t reached top Latin America exporters such as Ecuador, Costa Rica or Colombia, it was discovered in Jordan and Mozambique, revealing that its spread beyond Asia.
