Titans Clash in Silicon Valley over Patents (Reuters)
Rockstar, the tech consortium jointly owned by Apple, Microsoft, Blackberry, Ericsson and Sony, has sued Samsung, HTC and Huawei for patent infringement. The patents in question were Nortel’s and were recently purchased by Rockstar for $4.5 billion, beating out the companies it recently sued, along with Google. And lest you thing Google was spared legally, think again, as it was sued for seven cases of patent infringement by itself. What the suit boils down to is that all of the companies sued make smartphones that operate on Google’s Android platform, which competes fiercely with the products produced by the Rockstar group. So, what does this mean for investors? Well, should Rockstar be able to substantiate its patent infringement claims, it could mean a sea-change for the mobile phone industry and its investors.
